Start by deciding whether the priority is specialist experience, a local appointment, flexible hours, cultural or faith considerations, affordability, online access or coordination with a GP. A practitioner should explain their qualifications, privacy arrangements, fees, cancellation policy, approach and the limits of their service.
Online and phone formats may reduce travel and make it easier to speak with someone whose experience matches the concern. For complex symptoms, diagnosis, medication questions or concerns about safety, a GP or another qualified health professional may need to be involved. Counselling can complement appropriate healthcare but should not be presented as a replacement for it.
